The Art of Proportion: Sizing Wall Art Above Sofas & Headboards
A practical guide by interior architects on achieving visual balance and optimal hanging heights.
When walking into a room, your eye instinctively seeks focal grounding. Undersized artwork leaves the surrounding wall feeling barren and detached.
The Golden Rule of Furniture Sizing: Your wall art should span approximately two-thirds (60% to 75%) of the total width of the furniture piece beneath it. For an 84-inch sofa, target artwork with a collective width between 54 and 64 inches.
Hanging Height: The visual midpoint of your artwork should hang at 58 to 60 inches from the floor (standard museum eye-level), or 6 to 8 inches above the highest point of your sofa back.
Framing & Negative Space: For contemporary spaces, allow at least 2 inches of breathing room between triptych panels to let the wall surface interact with the composition.
